In this guide, you will be instructed on how to enable the newly introduced feature of opening and reading EPUB files on Microsoft Edge. Despite having supported EPUB files in the past, this capability has been inexplicably removed. Now, with the arrival of version 117, Microsoft is reinstating EPUB support in Edge.

EPUB, an open XML-based standard for electronic books (ebooks), offers various features like formatting, text reflow, font embedding, and multimedia content. This format is widely favored for distributing and reading ebooks due to its compatibility with a diverse range of e-readers and applications, including Windows 11, macOS, iOS, Android, and Linux.

With the release of version 117 (Canary Channel) for Microsoft Edge, the much-awaited support for EPUB files has made a comeback. However, it is worth noting that the feature is still under development and must be manually enabled.

  1. Move to the Shortcut tab, where you can find the Target setting, and there you can add the suggested option at the end of the path.

The target should be formatted as shown below:

"C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge SxS\Application\msedge.exe" --enable-features=msEdgeEPUBReaderEnabled

  1. Press the Apply button, then proceed by clicking the OK button. Next, launch Microsoft Edge and drag and drop a “.EPUB” file onto the browser.

As of the current version, there is no available option on the edge://flags page to achieve the same functionality. Therefore, using the –enable-features trick remains the sole method to enable EPUB support in Edge Chromium.
