It is very important to make sure that the right data is being sent to the right machine. If you are curious about the IP address you are currently using, there are several ways to find out.

If you are on the WLAN with your Mac, you can easily find out the IP address: Simply press and hold the [ALT] key, then click the wireless symbol in the top right. The current IP address will then be displayed in the context menu.

Read the IP Address in the System Settings

  1. First click on the Apple icon in the top bar.
  2. Then go to “System Preferences” and then “Network”.
  3. Now a window will open. On the left side you can choose between your possible connection(s).
  4. Select your active connection if it is not already selected. Now you can read your network address under the item “IP address”.

Find the IP Address via the Terminal

How to find your IP address on a Mac
  1. Open the Terminal. You can get there either via “Applications” > “Utilities” > “Terminal” or via the Spotlight search.
  2. Enter the command “ifconfig” in the terminal and confirm with [Enter]. This command gives you an overview of your network configuration and all network interfaces.
  3. For a better overview you can also use the command “ifconfig | grep “inet ” | grep -v″ or “ifconfig en0”.
  4. Your IP address is then displayed behind the entry “inet”.
