Smartphones have revolutionized our daily lives, providing numerous benefits, foremost among them being the constant accessibility to the internet. Additionally, they have rendered traditional maps obsolete with their integrated GPS capabilities, allowing us to effortlessly navigate and locate ourselves anywhere. However, despite these advancements, knowing your destination and coordinating meetups with friends can still be challenging, as entering precise addresses and following directions isn’t always straightforward.

To address this issue, Apple has introduced the Find My application, which comes pre-installed on iOS 13. This application serves as a unified replacement for the previous versions of “Find My iPhone” and “Find My Friends“, enabling users to locate both their iPhone and their friends in one convenient place. This innovative feature is truly remarkable! It’s worth noting that a similar capability exists on Android smartphones as well, although that is beyond the scope of this article.

One of the fantastic aspects of this application is the ability to effortlessly share your location with fellow iPhone, Mac, or iPad users, eliminating the need for them to input an address in order to reach you. This feature proves highly valuable when you find yourself lost in unfamiliar surroundings or amidst a bustling beach, for instance.

Now, let me walk you through the simple steps of sharing your location with friends, ensuring a smoother process for them to locate you!

How to Share Your Location From Your iPhone

To get started, open the Find My from iPhone application. It’s installed as standard on iOS 13, so you don’t have to go to the App Store to get it.

When you open the application, you are required to grant access to your location. Subsequently, it is at your discretion to allow or deny background access to your location. Should you choose to deny access, the application will only be able to determine your location while it is actively open. On the other hand, if you grant access, it will have the ability to track your whereabouts continuously during the location-sharing period and share your location with your friends, even if you lock your iPhone or switch to another application. Kindly note that declining this option will necessitate keeping the application open in order to enable location tracking.

Once these formalities have been completed, the application takes you to its home screen and offers you four tabs:

  • People
  • Devices
  • Items
  • Me

The People tab is the one that concerns us here. It allows you to share your current location with your iCloud contacts. To activate the feature, tap on Start Sharing Location. A list of your contacts with a compatible device (iPhone, Mac, or iPad) appears. Select one or more of them and press Send.

You can set the sharing time: You can choose between one hour, one day, or indefinitely. You can, of course, deactivate it yourself at a later date, even if the chosen time has not yet elapsed. We don’t recommend the “Indefinitely” option, especially if you’ve agreed to allow the application to access your position in the background, if only to avoid consuming too much battery power.

After you have selected the time for sharing, the system will initiate it, and your friend will receive a notification. Subsequently, your friend will be able to accurately pinpoint your location on a map, facilitating the process of finding or guiding you.
