Always On Display is one of the hot new features of the iPhone 14 Pro, but you should probably turn it off.

There were rumors going around that Apple would include an Always On Display in the next iPhone series when it announced the new lock screen customization options in iOS 16 at the WWDC this year. And even if only partly, things came to pass as being true. An Always On Display is included on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models, which are part of the new iPhone 14 series.

In the world of mobile devices, Always On Displays is not a new feature. It was popularized a long time ago by Nokia, Samsung and Pixel phones. As Always On Display shows, Apple is late to the game, but still manages to add something new to the table.

Unlike other always-on screens, which are primarily dark or monochromatic and only show time and a few app icons that contain incoming alerts, the display for the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max is bright and colorful. The always-on display on the 14 Pro is indeed constantly on.

But not everyone may like Always On Display. You’ll definitely want to turn it off, especially considering the negative impact on battery life. Fortunately, enabling Always On Display is a choice. And you can quickly disable it if you decide it’s not for you.

Unlike other brands, Apple only dims the backlight instead of blacking out the screen, and does not disable the wallpaper. But there are two disadvantages here:

  1. Although the display works at 1 Hertz, this still has a negative impact on battery life.
  2. Apple only reduces the brightness for the always on screen which is not healthy for OLED displays.
